THE HYPOCRITE [Playhouse Theatre, MTC production]. A hilarious bookend to the production of Tartuffe which opened Melbourne's theatrical year. Both plays are derived from Moliere's timeless commentary on class and religion, the earlier one updated to a location in present-day Toorak; the latter set in a vague 'anywhere' and 'anytime' yet using modern Australian vernacular to huge effect. The Hypocrite is a glorious romp from start to finish with Garry McDonald, Marina Prior and Kym Gyngell faultlessly negotiating the intricacies of Justin Fleming's clever rhyming couplets.
